Forbes.com: "Cell" chip specs revealed

Industry giants IBM, Armonk, N.Y., Sony, and Toshiba, both of Tokyo, Japan, have offered a further glimpse into the architecture behind their highly secretive, next-generation microprocessor?'Cell.' Since the project's birth in 2001, technical details of the high-performance chip, a possible contender to Intel and AMD microprocessors, have been extremely limited. The notes released now confirm that Cell is a multicore chip comprised of a 64-bit PowerPC processor core and multiple synergistic processor cores capable of massive floating point processing, optimized to run on multiple operating systems.
